Ethics Case Study – 40

Conflict exists in every organization and to a certain extent indicates a healthy exchange of ideas and creativity. However, counter-productive conflict can result in employee dissatisfaction, reduced productivity, poor service to clients, absenteeism and increased employee turnover, increased work-related stress or, worse case scenario, litigation based on claims of harassment or a hostile work environment.

Conflicts within work groups are often caused by struggles over control, status, and scarce resources. Conflicts between groups in organizations have similar origins. The constructive resolution of such conflicts can most often be achieved through a rational process of problem-solving, coupled with a willingness to explore issues and alternatives and to listen to each other.

Suppose you take charge of a department and in the first few days you notice that there is a lot of interpersonal distance among the staff. How will you attempt to close the distance in order to make the workplace more collective and collaborative?

The following are some suggested options. Please evaluate the merits and demerits of each of the options:

  1. a) You will call a departmental meeting of all staff members and talk to them on the virtues of corporate working.
  2. b) You will just call the senior members and talk to them and let the message pass down to the junior staff.
  3. c) You will request the senior staff for suggestions and after incorporating their suggestions, you will present a plan to the staff.
  4. d) You will issue a detailed circular and have a general staff meeting after a week to discuss the issue.
